MIKE Partner Highlight

Teacher Tony Melson, Rosemary Anderson High School

Tony Melson, M.Ed, health teacher at Rosemary Anderson High School (on right) joins MIKE’s Programs Coordinator Anastasia Underwood for an immersive lesson on analyzing social media for teens.

MIKE is proud to partner with some amazing teachers. This month, we’re featuring Tony Melson, health teacher at Rosemary Anderson High School-East Campus. Tony dedicates his time providing RAHS students with support, guidance and opportunities to succeed—in school and in life.

Tony partners with MIKE to provide mentored health education into two of his health classes at the alternative school campus, serving the eastern region of Portland. During the majority of the year, MIKE was joined by volunteer mentors who helped inspire the youth toward healthier outcomes. Sierra Grigsby and Alvaro Venegas, recent nursing student graduates from Warner Pacific University (WP). Coordinating with Melson to complement RAHS’ Health and Wellness curriculum, MIKE staff and the WP mentors hosted sessions that engaged students in hands-on activities, discussions and exploration. Students analyzed popular dairy/protein products, dissected facts from fiction in social media health posts, researched resources for mental health and stress reduction and participated in activities to measure vital signs and basic medical responses in certain emergencies.

Tony Melson, health teacher at Rosemary Anderson High School joins in with his students to explore how social media can distort facts. The MIKE lesson helps students distinguish fact versus fiction to make more informed decisions.

Melson showcased his determination to achieve greater skills in teaching for his students by spending much of his off-time in studies at Warner Pacific University. While RAHS seniors celebrated their graduation from high school, Melson celebrated his achievement in being awarded a master’s degree in teaching from WP this spring.

After a short rest during summer break, MIKE and Melson will be back hosting another year mentoring RAHS students toward healthier futures.
