Student-Based Focus

MIKE collaborates with classroom teachers to determine how mentors are assigned to students. MIKE uses a team approach with mentoring, connecting each mentor to a small group of students. One of the primary factors in placing mentors with students is assessing how the students may react to their mentor.

We know representation matters. When we assign mentors, we consider all aspects of representation that would best benefit our mentor-student ratio. That means, we strive to match mentors whose backgrounds and experiences reflect those of the students.

MIKE understands the importance of diversity when mentoring students who are made more vulnerable due to cultural, social and economic conditions. One of the primary ways students are more likely to consider careers in healthcare is by developing a connection with professionals in healthcare who closely represent themselves and their experiences.

That’s why we value what each mentor brings forward. They serve as powerful incentives for students. In this environment, mentors help shape greater exploration and learning. Students who can see themselves in their mentors, can envision themselves pursuing similar opportunities. These shared experiences also help mentors realize their importance in expanding equity.

MIKE’s mentor recruitment and placement are guided by these standards.
