Madeleine Duncan, a fourth-year medical student at Western University of Health Sciences, COMP-NOW, (WUHS), was awarded the prestigious Shirley Carpenter Memorial Endowment Scholarship from the Northwest Osteopathic Medicine Foundation during a ceremony on August 7, 2023. She joined nine fellow student doctors, representing five states in the U.S. who were recognized with scholarships to help support their endeavors in osteopathic medicine and community service. Duncan was chosen as a recipient by the Montana Osteopathic Medical Association, and presented with the scholarship by Wynde Cheek, DO, of Helena, Montana.

Duncan, who is busy with rotations in her home state of Montana, recently took time to return to Oregon earlier this summer to help organize and host a summer health camp with MIKE Program for foster children in Sweet Home. The three-day camp guided students in 8th and 9th grades through a local medical clinic, exploring what emergency medical technicians (EMTs) do on emergency calls, and multiple hands-on activities to discover more about the human body and careers in healthcare.

Duncan served as lead mentor for MIKE at Sweet Home High School for two years, then transitioned to host and trainer with WUHS for Sweet Home high school students to explore various labs at the Lebanon campus during this past school year.

Her dedication to serving MIKE and other organizations in both her Oregon and Montana communities, showcase her skills and commitment to public health. All 10 osteopathic medical students who received the NWOMF tuition scholarships this year demonstrated the highest standards and aspirations needed in healthcare. The NWOMF covers Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. Many of the recipients expressed the intent of working in rural areas within the five states.

As NWOMF President of the Board of Directors Douglas Woerner, DO, of Billings, Montana, and David Tate, Executive Director of NWOMF, in Canby, Oregon, stated during the closing comments at the ceremony, Duncan and the other student doctors represent a positive future in healthcare for the Pacific Northwest.
