New Year – New Focus with New Mentors

MIKE began a new school year at De La Salle North Catholic High School with a new group of mentors. MIKE is partnering with Warner Pacific University Department of Nursing to provide their students with an opportunity to engage with high school students inside their health classes.

MIKE is providing health programming for three of Health & PE Teacher David Mickola’s classes on Fridays during the fall semester. Guided by two returning mentors, Sang Jimmy Mai and Tiffany Blair, the WP mentors are collaborating on curriculum development, lesson plans, class activities and presentations.

While adhering to the COVID-19 safety protocols, the mentors are able to share student-focused information to guide the students toward greater understanding of health issues and inspire them toward healthier lifestyles.

By mentoring with MIKE, the WP students gain a rare opportunity to help shape health information for their younger peers. In turn, they develop stronger leadership and communication skills that they’ll use in the professionals.

Gabby Navarro noticed one facet that will help her navigate discussions with her future patients. “One interesting thing I noticed was that if a student looks like they are struggling to answer something, they may not ask for help,” she said. “But if you offer your help, they will take it.”
