Medical Students Amplify Health in Sweet Home

Medical Students at Western University of Health Sciences-COMP-NW (WUHS) look to prescribe another year of engaging health for students at Sweet Home High School. This innovative project provides first and second year WUHS medical students with an opportunity to give Sweet Home students an inside look at what happens in medical school. And it comes with an added benefit— imparting health information that directly impacts the students.

The medical students serve as mentors to the students during lunchtime once a week in the MIKE Health Club. Activities include presentations by the mentors on a variety of health topics, bringing in health professionals as guest speakers, snack preparation demonstrations and lively conversations. After the success of MIKE Health Club’s inaugural year, lead mentor Madeleine Duncan is planning on an exciting second year. This year, she’ll lead her WUHS peers in activities and conversations that cover a variety of health topics.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 safety protocols, the medical school students will link up with Sweet Home High School online. Located in Lebanon, Oregon, the medical students can deliver their insights, ideas and encouragement to the students without having to travel to Sweet Home. It’s telemedicine with an educational twist.
