Join MIKE’s Back-to-School Campaign

MIKE mentors demonstrate step-by-step techniques to help middle school students understand human anatomy during a summer camp session in Sweet Home, Oregon.

MIKE Program is launching our “Back to School” campaign to raise needed funds for programming Fall 2023. We’re expanding to more schools with more students, so we need to raise $25,000.

What is MIKE?

  • MIKE Program is a Portland-based nonprofit organization that provides health education programming for youth.

  • MIKE addresses health disparities in communities disproportionately affected by inequality and social and financial challenges.

  • Our flagship service is the Mentored Health Education program which provides “near-age” mentors for high-school and middle-school students through their existing health classes. MIKE also delivers programming in other community settings.

  • MIKE's cutting-edge and responsive curriculum focuses on an expanded foundation of health topics, including nutrition, mental health, physical activity, chronic disease prevention, social justice, access to healthcare and healthy foods, and more.  MIKE incorporates current public health issues into the programming, providing students with opportunities to voice their thoughts, ideas and concerns, and develop leadership and advocacy skills.

  • MIKE introduces youth to a variety of healthcare training and career opportunities.

  • By working in underserved communities, MIKE is expanding representation in the healthcare professions for many populations.

Why is there a need to raise funds for MIKE?

  • MIKE’s work is only possible with the support of the community. Our work is funded through grants, corporate support, and individuals like you!

  • There are currently more schools/sites asking for MIKE’s programming than we can presently meet with our current funding. The primary factor limiting programmatic growth is staff capacity. Increased funding will help MIKE hire additional program staff in the coming year to meet those needs.

  • MIKE needs to raise $25,000 by the start of the 2023 – 2024 school year to ensure we can successfully deliver programming to all our current partners, as well as allow us to move forward with pending new programming partnerships which are set to launch later in the school year.

Where the funds go:

This is a special fundraising campaign to stem the funding gap due to outside economic challenges. How do your donation dollars work?

  • $25 – Pays for one hour of MIKE staff to customize curriculum and deliver impactful educational health programming

  • $50 - Purchases healthy snacks for one class of students

  • $100 – Provides one hour of mentored health education programming for four students

  • $250 – Purchases physical programming supplies for one full class for hands-on, interactive health education programming

  • $1,000 -  Supports an entire cohort of students/youth to participate in two weeks of MIKE's Mentored Health Education and Healthcare Career Exploration programming
