Academic Year 2002-2003
Youth Opportunity Center
The Youth Opportunity Center (YO) is located at 3034 NE MLK, Portland, Oregon 97212. The Mission of the Youth Opportunity Center is to partner with the Enterprise Community youth, employers and members of the community to develop young people's personal attributes, knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences that prepare them for successful careers and lives.
During the Winter of 2002, the youth met twice a week for twelve weeks to develop a skit which explains the relationship between health habits and kidney disease.
Spring 2002
MIKE Program Youth presented their skit to the community. KOIN-TV aired a documentary, "What You Need to Know About Kidney Disease." The MIKE Program youth represented their skit to reach an estimated audience of 70,000 people in the Pacific Northwest. (Gerri Lutes, Production Manager, Craig Foltz, Cameraman).
Fall 2002/Winter2003
Benson High School: Health Occupations students developed a kidney model and then made a presentation to Hosford Middle School Physical Education Classes. Select youth took their presentation to a State Health Conference with competition in the Community Awareness category of health care issues.
Winter/Spring 2003
McCoy Academy: Meeting twice a week for ten weeks these youth built on the experience of the skit developed by the youth at the Youth Opportunity Center to refine the skit in a video presentation.
Urban League Street Academy: A more intimate project with much community overlay, this group worked on a poster presentation for the seniors enrolled in Urban League.
