A Living Memorial
MIKE Program serves as a living memorial to Michael (Mike) N. Hartnett, M.D. who embodied the best of the wisdom, kindness, care, and convictions of those he left behind. Dr. Hartnett was the first nephrology fellow at what is now OHSU to receive training to become a board certified nephrologist. He took care of patients for many years throughout the Portland Metropolitan Area, The Dalles, and La Grande. He volunteered at what was first Kidney Association of Oregon (KAO) and then the National Kidney Foundation of Oregon and Washington (NKF OR-WA). With Charles Martinson, M.D. he was co-medical director of dialysis at (Legacy) Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland. He treated patients at dialysis centers and hospitals throughout the tri-county metropolitan area.
Dr. Hartnett served as a nephrologist in the offices of NWRC from 1975 until his retirement in 1998. He died of lymphoma in 2000. He was 58.
History
At Dr. Hartnett's death his colleagues, friends, and family collaborated to develop a program that would represent the interests and concerns of Dr. Hartnett both and those whose lives continue to be impacted by kidney failure. MIKE Program was informed by Dr. MIKE Hartnett’s interest in education and prevention in those populations at high risk of kidney failure, his interest in collaborative problem solving, his belief in the power of education for youth, education in anything, and personal experience with diverse learning styles.
